Whether you filed in Riverside County Superior Court or another California court, the person you're suing or notifying in Corona has to be formally served before your case can move forward. Here's how it works, what the rules say, and how Swift Serve SoCal can handle it for you.

Step 1: Get your papers ready

Before anything can be served, you need file-stamped copies from the court: usually the summons, complaint, civil case cover sheet and any notice of case management conference. Make one copy for each person being served, and keep your own set. Our court filing checklist walks through it.

Step 2: Choose who serves them

You can't serve papers yourself if you're a party to the case. A friend over 18 can do it, but most people use a registered process server so the proof of service is done right and there's a record of each attempt. Swift Serve SoCal covers Corona, Norco, Eastvale and the Temescal Valley area, plus nearby Riverside and Jurupa Valley.

Step 3: Find the right address and time

In Corona we commonly serve South Corona tracts, gated communities off Ontario Ave and the business parks along the 91 and 15 freeways. Give us a home and a work address if you have them, a photo or description of the person, their car if you know it, and the hours they're usually there. That makes a fast serve much more likely.

Step 4: Service is made and documented

We try personal service first. If the person can't be reached after reasonable attempts, substituted service on a competent adult at the home or the person in charge at a business may be allowed, followed by mailing. Every serve includes a signed proof of service plus a photo or video of the service and/or the property.

Step 5: File the proof of service

The signed proof of service goes back to the court. For a summons in a civil case, that's form POS-010. File it on time so your case stays on track.

California Rules to Know

General information, not legal advice.

  • Anyone 18 or older who isn't a party to the case may serve papers (Code Civ. Proc. § 414.10).
  • Personal service is complete the moment the papers are handed over (Code Civ. Proc. § 415.10).
  • Substituted service is complete on the 10th day after the copy is mailed (Code Civ. Proc. § 415.20).
  • In most civil cases, the summons and complaint should be served and the proof of service filed within 60 days of filing (Cal. Rules of Court, rule 3.110(b)).
  • The defendant then has 30 days to respond (Code Civ. Proc. § 412.20). In an eviction (unlawful detainer), it's 5 court days (Code Civ. Proc. § 1167).
